Description | Small round basket with flat base and deep, slightly flaring sides; Base of basket is woven with alternating rows of plain twining and simple plaiting, with single row of 3-strand twining at junction of base and sides; Sides of basket are woven entirely in plain twining technique; Warp and weft material is spruce roots; Designs are woven in false embroidery technique using dyed bear grass leaves as the weft; Designs include 2 parallel bands that encircle the sides of the basket, each comprising 5 contiguous outlined terraced maroon diamonds with a small red cross within each diamond; Band of 8 diagonally stacked columns of black triangles separates the two primary bands; Additionally, one of the weft fibers in the 3-strand row of twining at the junction of the base and sides is dyed black spruce root. | |
