Description Deep, oval basket with flat base and rounded sides with in-curving rim; Corresponding oval lid with short lip is relatively flat and has braided loop handle; Both basket and lid are woven in coiled technique over bundle foundation, using smaller coils and narrower weft material than is typical of traditional Yup'ik coiled basketry; Start of both basket and lid is a braided band, a technique typical of northern Alaskan mat weaving; Several additional coils are inserted along ends on rim, possibly to compensate for ill-fitting lid; Warp and weft material is beach grass; Lengths of blue or red yarn are laid in with coiled stitches to form 4 decorative bands on exterior of basket (2 blue band around upper and lower sides and 2 red and blue bands around mid-section); 7 small geometric motifs in blue yarn are also embroidered pendant to lowest yarn band; Lid is undecorated.
