Description | Large cylindrical carrying basket with flat base and flexible vertical sides, woven entirely in open plain twining except for first few centimeters which are woven in closed plain twining; In open twined area, the warps are paired and the fibers in each pair are diverted either to the left or right in each succeeding row of twining; Primary warp and weft fiber is rye grass stems; Area directly below 2 point of attachment of handle employ warps of sinew strands which extend into looped braid above rim; Warps are gathered and braided at rim forming a scalloped rim, and are also incorporated into very heavy looped braid above rim that is connected to rim at midpoint of each scallop; Braid is continued to form long braided carrying strap; Designs are of worsted wool yarn and white seal gut and are woven in false embroidery technique and consist of vertical columns of stacked (2 high) rectangles in red, blue, and black wool and white seal gut, framed between black lines; Design band fills area in uppermost 8 cm of basket. | |
