Materials Rye grass (Elymus sp.) stems; Sinew; Worsted wool yarn
Description Large cylindrical carrying basket with flat base and vertical sides, woven entirely in open plain twining; Primary warp and weft material is rye grass stems; Directly below points of attachment for handles are area where three strands of plied sinew flanked by twisted rye grass fibers have been used as warps for added strength; Sinew warps are incorporated in looped braid above rim; Warps are paired throughout basket and fibers in each pair are diverted alternately to the left or right in each succeeding row of twining; Warps are braided at rim to form scalloped rim and incorporated into looped braid above rim and braided carrying handle; Designs around upper sides of basket are of worsted wool yarn in red, blue, and green and are woven in false embroidery technique; Designs consist of three parallel bands, each 3 rows wide, of a running stitches that are held in place by the weft stitches but not actually overlaying them; Areas between design bands are filled with pairs of blue knots; Design bands are discontinuous in areas of sinew warps.
