Description | Cylindrical carrying basket with flat base and vertical sides, woven entirely in open plain twining; Warp and weft material is rye grass stems; Warps are parallel throughout basket and are braided at rim forming a scalloped rim, and also incorporated into heavier looped braid just above rim that is connected at midpoint of each scallop on rim; Overlapping ends of looped braid are lashed together with sinew wrapping; Basket appears to never have had a carrying strap; Designs around lower 2/3 of basket's sides are of worsted wool yarn and are woven in false embroidery technique and consist of bands of small cross-shaped motifs in a single color (blue) or in two colors (red and brown or blue and green). | |
