Description | Cylindrical carrying basket with flat base and vertical sides, woven entirely in open plain twining; Warp and weft material is rye grass stems; Warps are braided at rim to form scalloped rim and also incorporated into heavy looped braid above rim that is connected at midpoint of each scallop on rim, as well as extended to form short braided carrying strap; Throughout basket the warps are paired, and on the base they are parallel, while on the sides the fibers in each warp pair are diverted either to the left or right in each succeeding row of twining; Designs on upper 1/3 of basket's sides are of worsted wool yarn, are woven in false embroidery technique, and consist of diagonal columns of small bicolored crosses (red/white, blue/white, red/purple, red/blue) and 1 tricolor cross (red/blue/white), bordered above and below by blue zigzag framing line (last section of lower framing line is of green yarn). | |
