Description | Large round basket with flat base and vertical sides, along with corresponding round flat-topped lid with vertical sides that fit down over rim of basket and very wide and squat central knob handle that contains seeds or pebbles to produce rattle sound; Basket and lid are woven entirely in plain twining technique except for several rows of simple plaiting near outer edges of basket's base and the underside of the lid's rattle handle, which has alternating rows of plain twining and simple plaiting; Warp and weft material is spruce roots; All designs are woven in false embroidery technique and consists of perfectly laid out network of concentric diamonds on lower 2/3 of sides of basket, woven of undyed and dyed (indeterminate color now faded to dark brown) bear grass leaves; Design on lid consists of 4-part whirling motif on knob handle woven half of undyed bear grass leaves and half of black maidenhair fern stems; 2 wide concentric bands cover the lid's brim, each bearing a pattern of alternately light (undyed bear grass leaves) and dark (maidenhair fern stems) triangles; Sides of lid show a continuation of the diamond network pattern from the basket's sides. | |
