Materials Cedar (Cedrus sp.) bark; Rye grass (Elymus sp.) stems; Bear grass (Xerophyllum tenax) leaves; Aniline dyes
Description Small round basket with flat base and slightly rounded sides that curve inward just a bit toward the rim; Warp material is cedar bark; Basket start on base is simple plaited cedar bark splints, but most of the base is wove in plain twining technique, using rye grass stems as the weft; Single row at junction of base and sides is woven in 3-strand twining technique; Sides of basket are woven in wrapped twining technique, with rye grass stems as the primary weft; An additional row of 3-strand twining occurs several rows below a cedar bark splint that encircles the top of the basket and forms a slightly recessed rim, over which the warps are bent and bound into the final rows of twining; One row of twining below and one row above the rim splint are woven in plain twining, using cedar bark as the weft; Designs on sides of basket are woven in either dyed rye grass stems or dyed bear grass leaves, and include 4 parallel bands in dark blue and blue-gray, varying between 2 and 4 twined rows in width; Only the two middle bands include bear grass fibers; Basket originally had lid which is now missing.
