Description | Modeled figurine of a turtle with its head and feet extended out; Exterior surfaces are scraped smooth, covered with tan slip, and lightly burnished; Cloud and rain and other geometric designs are painted in red, black, and white colors on the turtle's back; Facial features and feet are highlighted in black; Signature "Lela / Van" is printed in black slip on base. Lela and Van Gutierrez were husband and wife and the parents of Margaret and Luther Gutierrez and the grandparents of Paul Gutierrez and his wife Dorothy Gutierrez, all of whose work is also represented in the CAS pottery collection. | |
