Description | Large rectangular flat-bottomed basket with slightly flaring sides, and a low interior lip, along with corresponding flat, rectangular lid with low sides that fit over basket's lip; Base of basket and lid are woven in plaited technique over wide cedar slats, using cedar roots as the weft, and single bundle around perimeter of each is coil-wrapped and the whole units are supported on narrow footed bases comprising a cedar slat set on edge and trimmed with an additional bundle coil; Sides of basket are woven in coiled technique over cedar slats; Primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven of undyed reed stems and natural (red) and mud-dyed (black) cherry bark, using the coiling technique on the basket's sides and ribbon beading on the entire lid and along base and rim of the basket; Designs on ends of basket consist of central column of red and straw-colored crosses, flanked by negative vertical zigzags on black background; Sides of basket show central column of black T-shaped motifs on straw-colored background, flanked by vertical columns of red and straw-colored crosses and wide negative vertical zigzags on red background; Designs on lid consist of plain bands alternating with ribbon-beaded bear grass or dyed black cherry bark bands on top, and red cherry bark bands along edges; 3 small imbricated reed sections on interior may be weaver's signature. | |
