Description Round water jar with concave base, flaring sides that rise upward to a high, well defined shoulder, and a very wide neck that curves inward to a wide mouth; Interior is scraped smooth and covered with dark red slip; Exterior is also scraped smooth, covered with white slip, and painted with black designs, including band of stylized floral (?) motifs on cross-hatched background that encircles neck and very similar band encircling lower body; Double band of triangular motifs encircles mid-section of jar; Underbody is covered with red overslip; Jar is unsigned. [Original CAS catalog card for this jar refers to sticker on base of jar that reads “Guaranteed hand made at Santa Ana, Southwest Arts and Crafts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Price $15.00.” J. J. Brody (Maxwell Museum, Univ. of New Mexico) identified this in 1981 as “an Acoma-style Zia jar and probably dates to 1880-1900, when only one or two potters were working.” Joe Ben Wheat (Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, CO) also identified it in 1981 as a Zia jar, but thought it could have been made by a Zia woman at Santa Ana Pueblo.]
