Description | Mesa Verde black-on-white jar with rounded base, globose body, and short straight neck; Wide, flat handle with constricted ends is attached just below rim and at midlevel of shoulder; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and exterior is coated with white slip; Exterior of handle and band around neck both show pairs of opposed, terraced triangles; Wider band extending from upper shoulder to lower body shows 7 congruous spiral motifs that include interlocking solid and fine-line hachured elements; Wide black line outlines irregular lower edge of band; Wide black band with ceremonial break separates upper and lower bands; Series of black dots outline lip. Original CAS catalog card for this pitcher identifies it as a Tularosa Black-on-white example. | |
