Description | Round olla-shaped jar with flat base, flaring sides, high shoulder, short, inward sloping neck and very wide mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and slipped white, except underbody which is slipped orange; Upper body of exterior is painted with all-over fine line pattern of hachured triangles, producing optical illusion of star pattern; Black line encircles lip; Signature "Lucy M. Lewis Acoma" is painted in black lettering on base. Noted Acoma potter Lucy Martin Lewis is the mother of grandmother of many well-known potters. She is the mother of Anne Lewis Hansen and the mother-in-law of Rita Lewis, both of whose works are also represented in the CAS pottery | |
