Description |
Round, squat jar with rounded base, flaring lower sides, and wide, midlevel shoulder that slopes inward to narrow mouth; Rim form is inward curving with rounded lip; Interior is scraped smooth; Exterior is scraped smooth, slipped white, and burnished; Designs in black and red include 4 eagle wing patterns with central stars, arranged in cross-like pattern around mouth; White slip on red clay indicates ca. 1910; Jar is unsigned, but uneven painting suggests it was probably made by Nampeyo and painted by Fannie (or another of Nampeyo’s daughters) early in the daughter’s career. |
