Description | Effigy bowl in form of a bird; Base is flat and sides flare out and are shaped to contours of 2 spread wings and a narrow extended tail that tapers to a rounded end; Bulbous head of bird rises well above rim and has a short, rounded beak; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and well burnished, except for base; Bird's eyes are incised; Geometric patterns are painted in dark gray on interior surface of bird's wings and tail; Signature "Legoria Sta. Clara Pueblo" is lightly incised in script on base. Legoria Tafoya is the mother of Celes Tafoya, whose pottery is also represented in the CAS pottery collection, and the sister of Pablita Velarde, whose pottery and paintings are represented in the CAS pottery and painting collections, respectively. | |
