Description | Round jar with flat base, flaring lower body, midlevel shoulder, and inward sloping neck; Interior and exterior surfaces are scraped smooth; Exterior sides and interior of rim are covered with red slip and highly burnished; Design painted in matte tan around upper half of jar consists of band of negative feathers and 3 wide parallel lines just below feather band; Jar has been fired in an oxidizing atmosphere to yield a tan on red color; Signature "Marie + Santana" is lightly incised in script on base. Santana Martinez is the wife of Adam Martinez and the daughter-in-law of Maria and Julian Martinez, all of whose pottery is represented in the CAS pottery collection; Santana Martinez is the sister of Awa Tsireh, whose paintings are represented in the CAS painting collection. | |
