| Description | Effigy bowl in the form of a bird with flat base and flaring sides that extend outward to represent the bird's wings and a large, squared-off tail; Modeled head of bird rises well above rim and terminates in a pointed beak; Interior and exterior surfaces are scraped very smooth and are highly burnished; Punctate holes in bird's head represent its eyes; Lightning and cloud motifs are painted in gray in interior center and sides of bowl; Exterior is undecorated; Bowl is reduction fired to glossy black-on-black color; Signature "Christina Naranjo Santa Clara Pue." is very finely incised in script on base. Christina Naranjo was a sister to Margaret Tafoya, mother of Mary Cain, Teresita Naranjo, and Mida Tafoya, and grandmother of Stella Naranjo Chavarria and Victor Eckelberry, all of whose works are represented in the CAS pottery collection. | |
