Description | Round bowl with flat base, rounded sides, and inward curving rim; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth and highly burnished; Carved feather (?) motif comprising 3 stacked triangles at one end and curved hook at other end is repeated 3 times around upper sides of bowl on exterior; Carved motifs are painted with dark gray slip; Bowl is reduction fired to glossy black color; Signature "Margaret Tafoya" is incised in script on base. Margaret Tafoya is considered by many to be the matriarch of Santa Clara potters, having many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who have continued her legacy. She was the grandmother of Linda Tafoya-Oyenque, the sister of Christina Naranjo, and the aunt of Mary Cain, Teresita Naranjo, and Mida Tafoya, all of whose works are represented in the CAS pottery collection. | |
