Description |
3-dimensional carved figurine in standing position, representing Homichi (Field Mouse); Figure's gray body is dressed in a carved and painted rust brown kilt with snake motif, orange moccasins, and painted coral and turquoise necklace; Black band is painted across eyes; Center of each ear is painted red; Small bundle of multi-colored feathers is tied to top of head; Cotton string-wrapped piece of wire representing tail extends out from back of kilt; Field mouse is not a katsina but is a popular folk tale hero who reportedly defeated the prairie falcon in battle; A katsina doll-like representation is often requested of carvers, but field mouse is not part of the Hopi pantheon and has never danced as a katsina. |
