3-dimensional carving of standing figure, representing Aya (Rattle Katsina), one of the runner katsinam who appears during the spring dances to run with the men of the villages; If a man loses a race, Aya whips him with yucca, but if he wins he is given bread; Figure's body is painted salmon color except for muddy yellow shoulders, forearms, and lower legs and feet; He wears painted dance kilt with typical red, green, and black embroidered design, and white case mask with large black "X" across face and black line down center of mask and black "X" on front and back; Turquoise blue circle with black swastika and red rays around perimeter is located on each side of mask; Figure also wears wristlet of black yarn on right wrist. |
