Description | Round basket with flat base made from sheet of birch bark; Straight sides are made from additional bark strip that is cut along one edge into a series of short tabs which are folded over and then glued to interior of basket's base; Lower sides of basket are covered with natural colored porcupine quills which are laid side by side vertically and sewn through base and at midlevel of basket; Upper half of basket is wrapped on exterior with additional bark strip that is probably glued in place and secured along with grass bundle around rim by widely spaced black thread stitches; Corresponding round lid of basket is constructed in same manner as lower half, but has added decoration of maple leaf on top, done in natural colored quills. | |
