Description | Deep rectangular berry gathering basket with flat base, rounded corners, and slightly flaring sides, woven in coiled technique over a bundle foundation; Warp material is cedar splints and primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven in imbrication technique and consist of 14 composite vertical stripes extending up the sides of the basket, each comprising a central stripe woven of natural red cherry bark or mud-dyed black cherry bark, flanked on either side by stripes that alternate undyed bear grass with either natural red or mud-dyed black cherry bark; Additional, a band of natural red cherry bark is woven in ribbon beading technique along two coils along the lower sides and also along the final rim coil; Series of small holes in uppermost 3.5 cm of basket indicates location of original loop handles. | |
