Description | Painting on white paper entitled "Red Buffaloes" depicting red buffalo dancer shown in left profile and dressed in white kilt and red buffalo headdress; Forelegs and forearms are colored turquoise and remainder of body is painted deep red; Figure stand atop short steps holding tree branch in left hand and gourd rattle in right hand, facing pueblo woman dressed in moccasins, yellow dress, and white woven manta; Large basket filled with bread, corn and other gifts sets at woman's feet; Inscription "Happy Greeting to Mr. & Mrs. Young (sic) Elkus" is printed in turquoise-colored ink along bottom edge; Signature "From painting by Justino Herrera" is printed in black ink in lower right corner. | |
