Description | Deep rectangular berry gathering basket with flat base and flaring sides; Base of basket is woven in plain plaiting technique, while the sides are woven in coiled technique, both over bundle foundations; Warp material is cedar splints and primary weft material is cedar roots; Designs are woven in the imbrication technique, using undyed reed stems or bear grass leaves and natural red and mud-dyed black cherry bark; Design is repeated on each side and end of basket and consists of two stacked and inverted "V" motifs, each with a center vertical bar; Lower motif is woven of reed or bear grass and red cherry bark, while the upper one is woven of reed or bear grass and dyed black cherry bark; Center bar in each motif alternates undyed reed or bear grass and dyed black cherry bark; Single band of undyed reed or bear grass is woven in ribbon beading technique along exterior of final rim coil; Short cotton string loop remains on one upper corner and near center of one side (just below rim); Additional holes along upper sides indicate original position of addition carrying loops. | |
