Department of Ornithology and Mammalogy
The California Academy of Sciences has a long legacy of scientific research in the Pacific, starting with our 1905-1906 Academy Schooner
expedition to Galapagos. The leader of that expedition, Rollo Howard Beck, participated in multiple other trips to Galapagos, Alaska, and
down the coast of South America, and later went on to lead the Whitney South Seas Expeditions (1921-1929) for the American Museum. The California
Academy also returned to the Galapagos on the Schooner Zaca, which later sailed across the Pacific collecting as far away as Solomon Islands.
These expeditions all traveled by sailboat and left copious field journals and many scientific publications. These provide a baseline with which to compare modern collections and surveys.
