EXPEDITION Science: Field surveys to DNA...
Our work will be as broad as possible, from basic field surveys, natural history, and collection building, to studies of phylogenetics, phylogeography, DNA, and the spread of diseases. The basic field surveys provide an assessment of the conservation health of island species, labwork will involve ground-breaking scientific studies, and natural history collections will provide essential permanent records of Pacific biodiversity.

Scientific goals:

Our fieldwork focuses on excellent science that contributes to our knowledge of Pacific biodiversity, biogeography, history, and conservation. Efforts include:

  • Modern surveys of terrestrial and marine organisms
  • Collecting DNA samples for molecular genetics and genomic studies
  • Assessing historical changes in the abundance and diversity of organisms
  • Understanding processes involved in changes, including evolution, spread of diseases, human impacts, introduced species, just to name a few
