EXPEDITION STYLE: Sustainability
In the spirit of our new platinum green public museum in San Francisco, we will lead "green" expeditions to the field as well. Perhaps the single largest footprint that field scientists have is getting from place to place and finding a place to stay. By using a sailing vessel as our home and transport, we solve both problems with a green solution. Travel by sailboat means primarily using wind-power for travel. On-board power generators will use both wind and solar generators for lighting and computers, and thus significantly reduce the need for fossil fuels. We will use and showcase the most modern forms of sustainable energy while aboard our vessel.

Aspects of Sustainability:

We will make efforts to reduce or eliminate our carbon footprint and local impact. Efforts include:

  • Using wind and solar generators for power
  • Using wind to sail from point to point whenever possible
  • Using solar watermaker for fresh water
  • Purchasing sustainably-produced and harvested food locally to support local economies
