BOTANICAL TYPE SPECIMENS of the CAS and DS HERBARIA

Search the Type Holdings

The catalog of botanical type specimens at the California Academy of Sciences include types specimens from the herbarium of the California Academy of Sciences (CAS) and those from the Dudley Herbarium of Stanford University (DS). The total holdings of type specimens is over 10,000. The web searchable type catalog contains all the information in our type database. This catalog will be periodically updated.

Basic information on all of these types has been captured in our type database, but some of the records are more complete than others. The information that has been captured for almost all records includes the following: herbarium and accession number, family, taxonomic name (down to the level for which the specimen is a type), author, type status, country, and state or province for certain large countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador (only the Galapagos Islands), Indonesia, Mexico, and United States of America.

Microfiche coordinates are given for those specimens that are available on microfiche from Meckler Publishing (Barbara T. Keller. Index to the Vascular Plants Type Collection at the California Academy of Sciences. 1985).

For most of the records additional information has been captured which includes the following: bibliographic citation for the type, collector name(s), collection number, and collection date. Over the next year we hope to be able to bring all records up the same level of completeness.

If any errors are found in the type catalog, please send corrections to Deb Trock, Collections Manager (please see our staff listing for e-mail addresses).
