Franciscan Manzanita
Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. franciscana
(Ericaceae)

The shrub has the peeling bark and smooth bright leaves characteristic of the Heath family in California. Like other manzanitas, this one has white urn-shaped flowers.

DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to California, this species, which is now extinct in the wild, was at one time restricted to serpentine outcrops on the San Francisco peninsula. It is now known only as a cultivated plant.
