Diatom Genus Project

As part of a NSF-funded project, the Academy is compiling a database of verified diatom names (genus, species, variety and form names). Our database of verified diatom genus names is almost complete and will soon be published and then accessible and searchable on this web page.

In the database, most of the entries have now been verified against the original reference in which the name was proposed. The database contains nomenclatural information such as genus name, authority, reference, page, type and author of typification (if applicable). We also comment on the status of the name (e.g., whether it is validly published or not, legitimate or not, etc.). We have also included references to recent revisions and monographs on particular genera.

As an introduction to this work, we have listed all of the genus names currently present in our database. Along with validly published and legitimate names, this list includes invalidly published and illegitimate names. We also include some names that do not belong to the Bacillariophyta, because diatom species were described under these genera by earlier workers.

We need your help!

Please let us know if you notice a genus name missing, and if you know of a recent revision or monograph on a particular genus.
