| Comments | The name first appeared in Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293), p. 205, with description of 4 species, but is invalidly published for lacking a generic description. Also appears in Ehrenberg 1841 (ref. 002001) in lists of diatoms p. 203, 204, 205, 207, but it is not validly published here because no descriptions or illustrations are given. Valid publication is in Kützing 1844 (ref. 000595), where a Latin description is given (p. 107). Kützing describes 18 species but does not designate a generitype. Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) (p. 683) state: "The type of the genus is Navicula amphora C.G. Ehrenberg. Amphora ovalis (Kützing) Kützing (Frustulia ovalis Kützing) is a taxonomic but not a nomenclatural synonym." |
