| Comments | It seems that the first mention of the name Diploneis is in Ehrenberg 1844 (ref. 002694), where it appears p. 65, 71 (as part of a list as Pinnularia (Diploneis) with the species didyma, bombus, crabro, entomon, diomphala) and p. 84-85 (with the Latin description of the new species Pinnularia (Diploneis) bombus and Pinnularia (Diploneis) crabro). This name was intended by Ehrenberg (1844) for a subgroup within the genus Pinnularia and no type was designated. Because no subgeneric description was given, the subgenus name was not validly published. Cleve (1894), p. 76 (ref. 000232) treats Diploneis as a genus, provides an English description, comments about Ehrenberg's paper, describes and transfers to Diploneis a large number of taxa, but does not designate type. |
