Comments | The name is first found in Grunow 1862 (ref. 000428), p. 71 as a division (gruppe) of Synedra, a German description is provided and six species are included. The name is also given by Grunow 1862 (ref. 000428), p. 556, as a subgroup of Nitzschia Hassall, with a German description; four species are included (N. amphioxys, N. elongata, N. amphilepta, N. dianae) (spelling Pseudo-Eunotia). Grunow in Rabenhorst (1865, p.7; ref. 000430) also introduced the name as a subgroup of Ceratoneis Kützing (spelling Pseudo Eunotia), which is considered synonym of genus Pseudo-Eunotia Gr. in Van Heurck by Hustedt 1932, p. 258 (ref. 000506). Original spelling (Grunow in Van Heurck): Pseudo-Eunotia.. Two species are included by Grunow in Van Heurck, P. doliolus (pl. 35, fig. 22) and P. hemicyclus (pl. 35, fig. 23). A short diagnosis is given in the caption for figure 22 (translated from the French: "This species as well as the other one differs from Eunotia by the absence of terminal nodules and from Synedra and Ceratoneis by the absolute lack of middle line"). Note: Ceratoneis hemicyclus (Ehr.) Grun. in Rabenhorst 1865 is one of the 8 species placed by Grunow (1865) in the group Pseudo Eunotia (but is the same taxon as Pseudo-eunotia hemicyclus ?). Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) and ING (1996) stated that Hustedt 1932 (ref. 000506), p. 258 designated the type, Hustedt however did not make such a designation, he removed P. hemicyclus to Amphicampa, and stated that Pseudoeunotia included only one species, Pseudoeunotia doliolus. Hustedt's action does not constitute lectotypification which is effected by Round, Crawford & Mann 1990. Medlin & Sims (1993) transferred P. doliolus to Fragilariopsis Hustedt 1913, and proposed to conserve Fragilariopsis against Pseudoeunotia, because "the earlier name of Pseudoeunotia takes precedence over Fragilariopsis". Such conservation has not been formally proposed yet. |
