| Comments | Name conserved vs. Scalptrum Corda 1835, Gyrosigma Hassall 1845 and Endosigma Brebisson in Orbigny 1848 (rejected names, taxonomic synonyms) (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 009616). Eighteen Pleurosigma species are described in Smith's publication and no type is designated. Pre-conservation lectotypification in Boyer 1927, p. 466 (ref. 000946). A proposal to conserve the name Navicula angulata with a conserved type in order to preserve current usage of the name Pleurosigma angulatum (see Ross & Sterrenburg in Taxon 45:121. 1996) is recommended by the Committee for Algae (P. Compère, pers. com., 1998). |
