| Comments | Later homonym of Pyxidicula Ehrenberg 1834, nom. rej. This genus is presented by Strelnikova & Nikolaev as "Pyxidicula Ehr. emend. Streln. et Nikolaev". The authors indicate as synonyms, Stephanopyxis Ehrenberg 1844 (ref. 001185), p. 264 (where Stephanopyxis is described as a new subgenus of Pyxidicula Ehrenberg 1834), and Creswellia Greville 1857. They give Pyxidicula cruciata Ehr. 1843 as the type. After erecting the genus Pyxidicula Ehr. 1834 (T: Pyxidicula operculata), Ehrenberg 1843 (ref. 000294), p. 422, introduced a second usage of the name with the species Pyxidicula cruciata. Pyxidicula, in its second usage (Ehrenberg 1843), is homonymous with Pyxidicula in its first usage (Ehrenberg 1834). It is unclear whether the authorship for the second usage should be Ehrenberg 1843 or Strelnikova & Nikolaev 1986. Nevertheless the name is illegitimate being a later homonym of Pyxidicula Ehrenberg 1834, and a substitute name is needed. |
