| Comments | F.T. Kützing (1833, ref. 000594) p. 565 (p. 37 of reprint) first published this name for a section of Gomphonema Agardh (Gomphonema section Cymbophora). Two species were included in this group, G. simplex Ktz. and G. semiellipticum Ag., and no type was designated. A. de Brébisson (1838, ref. 000161) p. 13 (p. 18 according to Farr et al. 1979) adopts this group as a genus and includes 5 species of Cymbophora :C. gastroides (= Gomphonema simplex according to Brébisson), C. fulva (possibly a synonym of Gomphonema semiellipticum), C. macula, C. ventricosa and C. coffeaeformis, and does not designate a generitype. The two original species of Kützing's section are automatically included in the genus by Brébisson's reference to Kützing, and the lectotype has to be chosen among them. Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) selected C. gastroides (Kütz.) Bréb. as the type of the genus; although this species is not one of the 2 species included by Kützing in the section, because Brébisson considered Frustulia gastroides Kützing 1833 and Gomphonema simplex Kützing 1833 to be synonymous, we consider the genus to be typified with Gomphonema simplex Kützing, and Round, Crawford & Mann (1990) to be the authors of the lectotypification. |
