Comments The name Pterotheca was first introduced by Grunow in Van Heurck 1882 (pl. 83 bis, fig. 5,6,9-11) (ref. 001036), the name however was not validly published because no description was provided for the genus while including more than one species (P. aculeifera, P. subulata, P. kittoniana and Stephanogonia [Pterotheca?] danica). Pterotheca was treated as a subgenus of Pyxilla Greville in Van Heurck 1896 (ref. 000897). Forti 1909 provided the validating description (ref. 000336), p. 25. It is somewhat ambiguous in this paper to determine which species are included in the genus (some confusion with the use of P. which could be appled to Pyxilla, Pterotheca and Pseudopyxilla, and unconsistensies with the uses of P., Pt., Ps.. However, the following species are undoubtly included, Pterotheca hungarica (Pant.) Forti, P? subulata (might be a nomen nudum) and Pterotheca carinifera Grun.; probably also included are, P. subuliformis Grunow ex Forti (might be a nomen nudum) and P. spada (nomen nudum?). The choice of lectotype by RCM might be questionnable. Non Pterotheca Cassini 1916.
