| Comments | The name is introduced in Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293) p. 208 with the Latin descriptions of 2 species, Discoplea? graeca and Discoplea kuetzingii. The genus is not presented as new, and no generic description is provided. This genus is not validly published here because it lacks a description or diagnosis while including more than one species (see ICBN 1994, Art 42.1). The species D. kuetzingii and D. graeca are therefore not validly published in this paper. The genus name does not seem to have been used prior to 1840, it is used by Ehrenberg in 1842 and 1844, but many of these publications do not validate the name. It seems that the valid publication of this name might be in Ehrenberg 1844 (ref. 002694) where a single species, Discoplea americana, is described as new, Discoplea americana Ehrenberg 1844 would then be the type by monotypy. See also Ehrenberg 1842 (ref. 006103) p. 271 where Discoplea gallica is presented as new, but does not seem to be properly described. Round, Crawford & Mann (1990), p. 689 give "Discoplea Ehrenberg 1840, p. 208 (ref. 000293). T: D. kuetzingii Ehrenberg." Genus Discoplea is not treated in Farr et al. (1979) and current internet version of the ING. Håkansson 1986 (ref. 006237 and 006923) in her monograph on genus Discoplea does not discuss its typification, however she also considers Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293) to be the original publication. She notes (p. 36), from her observations of the type material of D. ? americana that "looking through the marked slides in the Ehrenberg collection, I found a marine centric species, but detailed investigation is necessary to be sure what genus it belongs to". The species Discoplea americana was never illustrated by Ehrenberg. |
