Lindley 1846 not verified by us; information from ING (1996). Sphaerophora was presented as a subgenus of Melosira by Hassall 1845 (ref. 000469), p. 397: "The species of the genus Melosira admit of division into two subgenera. The first of these, the species of which are chiefly marine, and to designate which the word Sphaerophora might be employed...."; Hassall (1845, vol. I, Text, ref. 006734) does not indicate the name of the species included, however, in volume II (Hassall 1845, Plates, ref. 001031), a single taxon, Sphaerophora globulifera Hassal is included (illustrated pl. 93, fig. 1). There is an ambiguity as to the status of this name (genus or subgenus) in Hassall 1845, definitely introduced as a subgenus in the text, used as a genus in the plates (with the binomial Sphaerophora globulifera). |
