Comments This name is not validly published because it is "merely proposed in anticipation of the future acceptance of the group concerned" (see ICBN 1994, Art. 34.1). In the discussion about Eupodiscus radiatus, Boyer makes the following comments:Rattray's genus of Eupodiscus is not the same as that of Ehrenberg's the type of which was what is known as Aulacodiscus argus. Bailey's form is neither an Aulacodiscus, Auliscus, or Pseudoliscus, as these genera are now understood, and cannot be assigned to any of them. As but one species is recognized as recent in North America I have not ventured to change the name. It is suggested, however, that if, according to the American code, it becomes necessary to place the species in a new genus that the genus be called Baileya in honor of the pioneer of American writers on the Diatomaceae. The species which appears to be the nearest to Bailey's is Eupodiscus Hardmanianus Grev. )(trans. Mic. Soc. Lond. 14:80, f. 14. 1866), a fossil form from Barbados. Hanna (unpublished manuscript) noted that the name was preoccupied (Harvey & Gray ex Torrey, in Emory, Notes Mill. Reconnois, 1848), and gave Aulacodiscus radiatus Bailey as the type. Name is already occupied, see Baileya Harvey & Gray ex Torrey in Emory 1848(Phan. Asteraceae) and Baileya Kutzing 1857 (Rhodophyta)

Campylostylus G. Shadbolt ex C.S. Boyer p. 212
Generitype T: Campylostylus striatus Shadbolt ex Boyer, nom. illeg. (= Synedra normanniana Greville 1862 = Campylostylus normannianus (Greville) Gerloff, Natour & Rivera 1978)
Designated by Van Heurck (000897)
Year Designated 1896
Nomenclatural status valid

Comments Type by original designation (also monotypic). The name was first known as Campylodiscus striatus Shadbolt (unpublished manuscript 1849). Greville 1862 (ref. 000411) published a description of Synedra normaniana n. sp. Grev. (p. 231-232) and gave "Campylodiscus striatus Shadbolt, ms" as a synonym. Greville did not accept the genus Campylostylus ("I cannot perceive any good ground for separating it from Synedra") and therefore did not validly published the name. Van Heurck 1896 (ref. 000897), p. 318, accepts this name (as Campylostylus Shad. 1849 ms.) and provides a description of C. striatus. The description "generico-specifica" of C. striatus given by Van Heurck, however, does not validate the generic name because "another name [S. normanniana Gr.] had previously been validly published, based on the same type" (see Art. 42.1.c). The validating description is in Boyer 1927, p. 212.

Pseudosynedra G. Leuduger-Fortmorel ex C.S. Boyer 1827, pg. 212

Year Designated 1927
Nomenclatural status valid/illegitimate

Comments Type by original designation (also monotypic). Later homonym of Pseudosynedra Pantocsek ex Moesz 1904. This name was first introduced in Leuduger-Fortmorel 1892 (ref. 000607) p. 31, with the spelling Pseudo-Synedra. This was however not a validly published name because it was not intended as a new genus name: "Les deux espèces suivantes sont fort rares et c'est sans grande conviction que nous les plaçons après Synedra; mais pour ne pas créer de genre nouveau sans base certaine, nous les désignerons sous le nom de: Pseudosynedra". The species included are Pseudo-synedra Peragalli Leuduger-Fortmorel and Pseudo-Synedra Debyi Leuduger-Fortmorel (note: these 2 species names are not validly published in Leuduger-Fortmorel). In addition, the following comments (in French) are made as part of the description of P. peragalli: "It seems to us that this species does not have the characteristic elements of Synedra neither those of Licmophora or Sceptroneis, and that it belongs to an undefined genus close to the ones mentioned above." It was also not validly published by Leuduger-Fortmorel because no generic description was given while including more than one taxon. Boyer validated the genus by accepting it and by providing a description. He included only one species, P. peragalli, which he designated as the type.
