Comments Never intended to be a genus by Castracane who stated, in his section about Triceratium Ehrenberg "....if Ehrenberg had foreseen the extension of his genus to embrace polyangulated frustules, he would have chosen the name Polyceratium".

Comments Three specimens are illustrated by Castracane (pl. 8; figs. 8, 8 alpha, 8 beta), all named "Willemoesia sp." (not legitimate names). Castracane states p. 165 that "they may well be regarded as three types of a new genus". Castracane's species was subsequently described and validly published by Rattray 1890 (ref. 001485), p. 4, as Coscinodiscus humilis Rattray. Rattray did not accept Castracane's genus. Van Heurck 1896 (ref. 000897), p. 537 validly published a single binomial in this genus: Willemoesia humilis (Rattray) Castr. ex Van Heurck. Willemoesia humilis is conspecific with the material associated with the protologue of the genus, and therefore eligible for being the type species; Van Heurck's action constitutes the lectotypification of the genus.
