Comments Name conserved vs. Rhizosolenia Ehrenberg 1843 (nom. rej.) (see ICBN 1956, p. 201, ref. 009616). Brightwell 1858 discusses the genus Rhizosolenia Ehrenberg, gives Ehrenberg's description of the genus, names the 5 species included in Rhizosolenia, explains his belief that "these supposed species are only fragments of the siliceous organisms we are about to describe". Brightwell gives also his own description of the genus Rhizosolenia (p. 94), and describes 4 new species: R. styliformis, R. imbricata, R. setigera, R. alata. No type originally designated. Farr et al. (1979) and ICBN (1994) give R. styliformis as the type. Boyer 1927, p. 98 (ref. 000155) incorrectly gave Rhizosolenia calyptra as the type, a species that is not one of the original species.
