| Comments | The genus name seems to have first appeared in Ehrenberg 1838 (ref. 006908), p. 176, as "Campylodiscus clypeus (= Cocconeis? clypeus)" but was not validly published (see ICBN 1994 Art. 34.1.d: "a taxon is not validly published by the mere mention of subordinate taxa included in the taxon concerned"). SVL incorrectly gives "Campylodiscus Ehrenberg 1840 (ref. 000293) p. 206" where Campylodiscus clypeus, C. noricus, C. remora, and C. (coronia) echeneis are described; there is however no generic description and it is therefore not validly published in this paper (ICBN 1994, Art 41.2). Kützing 1844 provides the validating generic description, describes 6 Campylodiscus species but does not designate a type. |
