Comments SVL says: "Amphidiscus Ehrenberg 1839; Ehrenberg 1854, icon plur". The name is introduced in Ehrenberg 1839 (ref. 001179) p. 31 as "Amphidiscus rotula (nov. genus ?)" with no description or illustration. In Ehrenberg 1839 (ref. 002422) two species of Amphidiscus are mentioned p. 127: A. rotula and A. Martii but there are still no descriptions or illustrations. According to Hanna (unpublished manuscript), more species are included in genus Amphidiscus in Ehrenberg’s works of 1840, 1844, 1845, 1853 and 1854. Hanna also believed that "these forms are all probably parts of sponges." This genus name may have never been validly published. correction note: (9/22/04, ef) in Ehrenberg 1839, p. 127, H. rotula and H. martii are listed, and there is a short description in German of H. martii. The genus name is therefore valid as of 1839. The type is H. martii (by monotypy)
