Comments Type by monotypy. This name appears p. 299 of Grunow 1883 (ref. 000443), under comments (in German) made about plates 124 and 125 (Actinoptychus and supplement to Actinocyclus) of Van Heurck's Synopsis des Diatomées de Belgique (1883, ref. 001037). Grunow's comments referred specifically to pl. 24, fig. 13, 14 where caption reads "13. Actinoptychys (genus novum ?) annulatus var.? minor Grun.; 14. Actinotychus (genus novum ?) annulatus (Wallich) Grun. (Triceratium annulatus Wall., Tr. Sinence Schwartz)". Grunow (ref. 000443) commented that A. annulatus (Wallish) Grunow, and several other species figured by Schmidt form a characteristic group that "someone possibly could name Cymatogonia". In the Treatise of Diatomaceae (1896, ref. 000897), p. 496, Van Heurck makes the following comment about Schuettia De Toni 1894:" Schuettia are Actinoptychus with triangular valves; the figure in the text (fig. 237) represents A. annulatus (Wall.) Grun., which is the type-form of this new genus. This form is met with at Java and in the China Sea. If a new genus is to be constituted for triangular forms, the name given by Dr. De Toni is untenable, but it should be called Cymatogonia, which was proposed by Mr. Grunow in 1883 (ref. 000443), in the 'Botanisches Centralblatt', no. 36 (vol. XV, no. 10)". The name is not validly published by Grunow 1883 because no generic description was provided. The name is not validated by Van Heurck 1896 (ref. 000897) who does not accept the genus.
