Comments Type by monotypy. At the end of the discussion on Navicula alternans, Schumann (1867), p. 73 (ref. 000814) introduces a Latin description with: "Sollte für diese Formen ein neues Genus aufgestellt werden, so schlage ich als Namen Alloeoneis (alloiois, naus) vor und als Characteristicum" (If a new genus should be created for these forms, then I propose the name of Alloeoneis, and as characteristics:..). Schumann indicates that only Navicula alternans and var. is included at the present time, but that the genus will probably include more species in the future. We consider this name to be invalidly published by Schumann for beign "merely proposed in anticipation of future acceptance" (see ICBN 1994 Art. 34.1b). Farr et al. 1979 do not accept Schumann 1867 as the valid publication of the name and give genus name and authorship as Alloioneis J. Schumann in Cleve 1878, p. 7 (ref. 000221) with Navicula alternans being the type.
