Comments Type by monotypy. Comments: Name first introduced in Ehrenberg 1851 (ref. 006097) p. 162, 165, but not accompanied by descriptive matter, and with the statement that it was perhaps a Coscinodiscus. Illustrations are provided in Ehrenberg 1854 (Mikrogeol., Plates, ref. 000966) for Coscinophaena discoplea ? (pl. 16/2, fig. 42) and Coscinophaena ? (pl. 34/2, fig. 7). Also Coscinophaena ? altaica is listed in Ehrenberg 1854 (Mikrogeol., Text, ref. 000300), p. 98, but no description is given. There is no mention in Ehrenberg (1854) that this is a new genus. This genus name is validly published in Ehrenberg 1854 without a description because it is considered originally monotypic (see ICBN Art. 42). Although 3 species seem to have been originally included, only Coscinophaena discoplea is validly published. The species illustrated on pl. 34/2, fig. 7 has no name, and Coscinophaena altaica is a nomen nudum. De Toni 1894, p. 1370 (ref. 000951) provides a Latin description of the genus Coscinophaena Ehrenberg, and includes 2 species C. discoplea, and C. altaica (with no description or reference to a description or an illustration). Farr et al. (1979) and current internet version of the ING consider the valid publication of the name to be in De Toni 1894, p. 1370 (ref. 000951), and the type to be not designated.
