Comments Type by monotypy. In Van Heurck, one species illustrated, Stoschia ? paleacea Grun. and the following comments (in French) "The frustules are narrow and have two identical valves. Genus Stoschia, including Stoschia mirabilis are distinguished from Coscinodiscus radiatus by elongated valves slightly cuneiform and will be studied by Mr. Janisch in his work on the diatoms collected during the Gazelle expedition." Only one species was validly published by Grunow in Van Heurck, the other species, S. mirabilis is a nomen nudum. Stoschia admirabilis (a probable synonym of Stoschia mirabilis nom. nud.) was validly published in Schmidt 1889 (ref. 000806), pl. 140, fig. 17. Round, Crawford & Mann (1990), p. 803, incorrectly give Stoschia mirabilis as the type. In the 1888 unpublished manuscript of Janish (ref. 000541) apparently the epithet mirabilis was changed to admirabilis, illustrated pl. 1, fig. 1-5, as Stoschia admirabilis C. Janish ng. et sp.
