Comments The name first appeared In Ehrenberg 1841 (ref. 002001), p. 208, as T. libycum, a nomen nudum. The genus name became validly published in Ehrenberg 1843 (ref. 000296) p. 136, where Tetragramma is introduced as a new genus and a Latin description is provided, no species however are listed, but there is a reference to the Marionen-Inseln material from where T. libycum was listed. Ehrenberg also states in this paper (according to Bailey 1854, p. 7, ref. 000122) that "the only species known to him is closely allied to the Terpsinoë musica". Bailey, p. 7, also gives Ehrenberg's Latin description of genus Tetragramma (as in ref. 000296). Bailey does not mention the name Tetragramma lybicum which seems to have remained a nomen nudum. Bailey, however, mentions the name T. asiatica Ehr. "the specific characters of the Asian species, T. asiatica Ehr., are not given, nor have I seen any drawing or specimen of it." It is clear that T. americana Bailey is not conspecific with the material associated with the protologue of the genus, and does not qualify as the lectotype. Farr et al. (1979) and current version of the ING indicate that the type is not designated.
