Comments A description of the new genus is given by Ehrenberg 1830 (ref. 001999), p. 60, with no indication of which species are included, but with Bacillaria ulna Nitzsch placed in Navicula (see p. 74, 84, 89). This paper (ref. 001999) is a reprint of Ehrenberg 1832 (or 1930 ?) (ref. 000281), where the genus is described p. 40. It is assumed that ref. 001999 was published prior to ref. 000281. The combination Synedra ulna (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg was published by Ehrenberg 1832, p. 87 (ref. 000282). Boyer 1927 (ref. 000155) designated S. ulna as the type of Synedra. Williams 1986 (ref. 006857), p. 132, argued that Synedra ulna could not be the type species of the genus, because it could not be regarded as one of the species originally included in the genus, and that Synedra balthica Ehrenberg (= S. gaillonii (Bory) Ehr.) should be regarded as the type species. He added that conservation of Synedra with S. ulna as the type would be necessary to preserve the current usage of the generic name. Farr et al. (1979), p. 1713 (ref. 006663) and Round, Crawford & Mann (1990), p. 704 (ref. 003245) list S. balthica as the lectotype of Synedra. On the other hand, the entry for Synedra in the current internet version of the ING has been corrected by P. Silva, and S. ulna seems to be accepted as the lectotype.
